Aftercare
Healing it right
Your artist or piercer walks you through aftercare in person. This page is the version you can come back to at 2am.
Tattoo aftercare
- Keep the wrap on as long as your artist tells you, then wash gently with clean hands and unscented soap.
- Pat dry. Apply a thin layer of the aftercare product your artist recommends — thin is the key.
- Don’t pick or scratch the flaking skin.
- No soaking: skip pools, hot tubs, baths and open water until it’s healed.
- Keep it out of the sun while it heals, then use sunscreen for life — sun is the biggest thing you control in how a tattoo ages.
Piercing aftercare
- Clean with sterile saline spray; don’t twist or turn the jewelry.
- Hands off, and keep hair, makeup and phones away from it.
- Expect some swelling and tenderness at first. Don’t change jewelry until your piercer says it’s ready for a downsize.
- Oral piercings: rinse after eating with an alcohol-free mouthwash.
When to get help
Some redness and tenderness is normal. If you have spreading redness, heat, swelling that gets worse, pus, red streaks or a fever, see a doctor. You’re always welcome to call the shop too — 303-555-0188.
