Sun, salt and lovebugs: caring for paint in Florida

What the Florida climate does to a finish, and the habits that help.

UV and heat

Year-round sun fades paint, dries out rubber trim and cracks dashboards. Shade, a windshield sunshade and a UV protectant on interior plastics go a long way.

Salt air

Near the coast, salt settles on paint and in the undercarriage. Regular rinsing, including underneath, slows corrosion.

Lovebugs

Twice a year lovebug swarms leave residue that can etch clear coat if it bakes on. Wash them off soon, soak stubborn ones rather than scrubbing, and a layer of protection makes them easier to remove.

Hard water and sprinklers

Mineral-heavy water leaves spots that can etch paint and glass in the sun. Dry the car after washing and park away from sprinklers where you can.
