Check the license
In North Carolina, the Licensing Board for General Contractors licenses general contractors, and a license is generally required for building projects of $40,000 or more. Electricians, plumbers and heating and air contractors are licensed by their own state boards. Each board has a public license search — ask for the license number and check it yourself.
Get the price in writing
Ask for a written estimate that lists what's included, what isn't, and how changes will be priced. Compare quotes for the same scope of work, not just the bottom line.
Ask about insurance
Ask whether they carry liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers' compensation. A good business will answer without hesitation.
Look at their own work
Ask for photos of jobs like yours and read reviews on more than one site. A few local references are worth more than a long list of stars.
Be careful after a storm
After hurricanes and floods, out-of-town crews knock on doors. Take your time, get more than one quote, and check the license before you pay anything up front.
