Running a small business through North Carolina's hurricane season

Storm prep, flooding and keeping customers informed — habits that help local businesses and the people they serve.

Know the season

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Storms reach far past the coast — heavy rain and flooding can hit the Piedmont and the mountains too.

Have a plan before the forecast

Decide ahead of time who closes up, what gets moved off the floor, and where equipment and vehicles go. Back up customer records and keep copies off-site or online.

Check your coverage

Read your business insurance before storm season. Flood damage usually needs its own policy, and business-interruption coverage varies. Ask your agent what you actually have.

Tell customers what to expect

When a storm shuts you down or reschedules jobs, update your hours everywhere customers look — your website, your listings and your phone message. A short note saves a lot of calls.

Use the state's resources
